When discussing the Hybrid Tax Credit it is important to note that Federal and State governments offer different hybrid tax incentives. This article from Hybrid Shift focuses on Federal hybrid tax credit incentives. To see what vehicles qualify and how much each model earns by State refer to each State''s Department of Revenue website.
Qualification Requirements
In order for a hybrid to be eligible for the Federal hybrid tax credit it must have been placed in service after December 31st 2005 and purchased before December 31st 2010. Only the original owner of the hybrid vehicle can claim the tax credit, used vehicles do not qualify. Individuals or companies leasing a hybrid vehicle are not eligible to claim the tax credit, in this case the leasing company is the qualifying party. And lastly the hybrid vehicle must be predominately used within the United States.
Important Considerations
Depending on the type of vehicle being purchased certain criteria may reduce the amount of tax credit a vehicle is eligible to receive. This mainly applies to hybrid SUVs and Hybrid trucks where the manufacture offers the same model in 2WD and 4WD. 2WD models are typically eligible to receive the maximum tax incentive where the 4WD models may receive a lesser amount.
The Federal government has placed a stipulation on the hybrid tax credit where if a manufacture has reached 60,000 in total hybrid sales then the hybrid vehicles it produces will be phased out of the Federal tax credit program. Some hybrid manufacturers like Toyota and Honda which make the popular Prius and Civic no longer qualify for the federal hybrid tax credit because they have been phased out however they may still be eligible to receive a state tax credit.
